DeSousa to Neumann College

Congrats to former Trail Smoke Eaters forward Nic DeSousa on signing with NCAA Division III school Neumann College in Pennsylvania. The 20 year-old from Fraser Lake played most of his 168 BCHL games with the Prince George Spruce Kings, but was acquired by Trail at last year's January 10th deadline and put up 14 points (4-10) in 18 games with the orange & black.

The official release from the BCHL is here. I'll have audio reaction from Smokies coach Bill Birks as part of tomorrow's pre-game package for Trail's exhibition game against the Brooks Bandits.

Congrats Nic!

Birks Post-Camp Audio

I caught up with Smokies head coach and GM Bill Birks after yesterday's intra-squad game at the Cominco Arena for his thoughts on camp and an early look at what to expect in this coming weekend's pre-season tournament at the Cominco Arena. To take a listen, click here.

Blue 2, Gold 1: Pre-Season Begins Thursday

A lively, yet low-scoring intra-squad game at the Cominco Arena this afternoon served as the exclamation point on a Smokies camp that, by all accounts, got better as time went on.

Two ten-bell saves from Zach Perehudoff in the final 5:15 of the third period sealed a 2-1 Team Blue victory over Team Gold in today's matinee. The 18 year-old local product robbed Erik Cooper and Kody Disher in quick succession after allowing a laser beam from Adam Boytinck to get past him early on in the frame.

The line of Cooper, Boytinck and Chris Romanchuk generated a fair amount of offense for gold, as one would expect with two returning vets. The same can be said for Blue's top line of Clayton Chessa, Kyle Horsman and Connecticut recruit Josh Roberts, who for my money was one of, if not the fastest skater this afternoon.

Young d-men played a big role as well. Coquitlam's Daniel Del Bianco, who APed with the Smokies last year showed a lot of pace while fellow major midget recruit Brandon Egli showed no hesitation to jump into the play all day, scoring twice in a morning scrimmage to boot.

The afternoon also featured a first-period scrap between former Castlegar Rebel Dylan Richardson and former Nelson Leaf Tanner Burns.

As 20 year-old forward Logan Proulx stated earlier this week, Smokies head coach Bill Birks and the rest of his staff will have some tough decisions to make in advance of the September 23rd home opener against Westside, and in my conversation with the first-year head coach (which will be posted here once it airs on Mountain FM Monday), he says he expects to keep 3 goaltenders, 8 defenceman and 15 forwards, give or take, for next weekend's pre-season tourney against Brooks, Powell River and Wenatchee. The possibility of adding some scoring prowess in advance of the regular season also exists.

Smokies Camp Audio, Nitehawks Begin Today

I took in the last scrimmage of the day at Day One of Smokies camp at Cominco Arena. Goals were few and far between with Team Blue edging Team Gold 2-0, but there was no shortage of speed and competitiveness from veterans and rookies alike on the ice.

One of the Gold players who should make a big impact on this year's Smoke Eaters is d-man Nick Wong. To hear our brief chat click here.

Blue's forward ranks were led by overager, and local product Logan Proulx. To listen to our conversation click here.

I understand the roster should be cut down by tomorrow's intra-squad game (1:00, Cominco Arena). Without naming names, there were a couple of players I noticed last night who are looking to make the jump from major midget, should be interesting to see whether they'll be a part of tomorrow's action.

Nitehawks Camp Begins: The Beaver Valley Nitehawks get camp underway today in Fruitvale, though a handful of players (who either spent the whole year in BV or were listed as affiliates) were on the ice in Trail yesterday. Head coach Terry Jones expects to ice another competitive squad despite expecting a fair amount of turnover from the 2010-11 team that I thought could well have been a dark horse in last year's KIJHL playoffs. I chatted with Coach Jones earlier this week, listen here.

Bits & Bites: I ran into Creston Valley head coach/GM Brent Heaven at the rink last night, I understand the Thunder Cats will be sporting new uniforms this season (though it's still anyone's guess as to when they can move into their newly-renovated facility). Trail's camp features roster players who represented four of the five Neil Murdoch division teams last season in the KIJHL (those being Castlegar, Nelson, Beaver Valley and Spokane).

Smokies Camp Underway

It's finally here.

The Smokies returnees and hopefuls will strut their stuff over the next three days at the Cominco Arena in what head coach Bill Birks told me yesterday should be a "very competitive" weekend. 80 players are in town for a series of practices and scrimmages (I posted the schedule earlier this week and it's also available here), culminating in the annual intrasquad game Saturday afternoon.

To hear my full conversation with Birks, click here.

Unfortunately, working full-time in Castlegar means my time at camp will be shorter than I'd hoped, but I'm hoping to catch a scrimmage or two today and tomorrow before spending most of the day at the rink Saturday. Stay tuned for thoughts and (depending on my point-and-shoot skills) a few shots of the action.

Take A Free Ride: In conjunction with AM Ford, the Smokies are running their annual "Drive One for the Smokies" event this Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm. It's a great opportunity for the club to raise funds (the Rebels made $5,800 last season) and if you're a car guy (or gal), I'm sure I could think of worse ways to spend an hour.

Rebels Camp Wrap: I chatted with Castlegar head coach Steve Junker earlier this week about the weekend festivities in Osoyoos, to hear that conversation click here.

Nitehawks Camp: All the fun in Fruitvale begins tomorrow. I chatted with Beaver Valley bench boss Terry Jones yesterday, I'll post that audio once it's run on our station.

Trail Orioles: And as if there wasn't enough sports action in the greater Trail area this weekend, the Trail AM Ford Orioles are hosting the Western Canadian Baseball Championships at Butler Park this weekend. Trail's opening game is tonight at 7:00 against the BC champion Vernon Diamondbacks, before playing clubs from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the next two days.

Bits & Bites: Former Smokie Mike Betz, who was recently traded back to the BCHL (Salmon Arm) from Alberta, is reportedly attending the camp of the WHL's Vancouver Giants. Betz is a past first-round bantam draft pick of the Spokane Chiefs. Congrats to my former colleague (and former Nelson Leafs play-by-play man) Matt "Anthony" Soper on landing the webcast gig for the Prince George Spruce Kings. I can't wait to hear him call a Prince George overtime winner (against anyone but the Smokies, of course), and by my count, the Spruce Kings are the seventh team in the league to have a new announcer this season. Speaking of play-by-play and radio, interesting to note the KIJHL's Osoyoos Coyotes will be heard on a station based in nearby Oroville, Washington. They were on EZ Rock Osoyoos last season.

Busy Cominco Arena: The Creston Valley Thunder Cats will be holding their main camp at Cominco Arena in concert with the Smokies pre-season tournament September 2nd-4th. That's because of an unexpected development in the ongoing renovations at the rink in Creston. The T-Cats have issued a release here.

Bits & Bites: Expect audio from Rebels head coach Steve Junker discussing last weekend's Rebels camp soon, as well as a preview of this weekend's goings-on in Trail and Fruitvale. The Rebels will have new home uniforms this season, expect a mix of new and old in the design while the away jerseys will stay the same. Defenseman Easton Bodeux, who APed with Trail last season, has been traded in the KIJHL from Sicamous to Fernie. Former Smokie Mike Betz is also back in the BCHL with Salmon Arm. He's had his rights traded several times across three provinces this summer after spending last season with the Penticton Vees.

Inching Closer: Training Camps Underway

With the start of Castlegar Rebels camp in Osoyoos this afternoon, it's now safe to say that hockey season is right around the corner. The Steve Junker interview I posted earlier this week has a thought or two about what Rebels fans should expect out of the weekend's action, which of course is in the South Okanagan due to the fact the BC Seniors Games have taken our region by storm.

Craig Lindsay has this piece in this week's edition of the Castlegar News. He'll be your source for print material on the club this season as he's been hired as the new reporter there and I will not be resuming last season's freelance gig this season.

As for the rest of our local clubs' camps:

Trail Smoke Eaters: Aug. 25-28, Cominco Arena.

Beaver Valley Nitehawks: Aug. 26-28, Beaver Valley Arena.

Grand Forks Border Bruins: Aug. 29-31, Grand Forks Arena.

Nelson Leafs: Aug. 31-Sept. 3, NDCC Arena.

Hard to believe the Kootenay-Boundary's first pre-season games (AJHL Brooks @ Trail, PIJHL North Vancouver @ Grand Forks) are less than 2 weeks away. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I can't wait.

Baker to Portland

The WHL's Portland Winterhawks have signed Trail product, and former Smoke Eater and Nitehawk forward Joey Baker.

The 18 year-old put up 12 points (4-8) last season in his rookie year with the Smokies. His 2009-10 campaign in Beaver Valley saw him score 5 times and add 96 penalty minutes. According to this release from the Winterhawks, he had been placed on Portland's protected list last September.

Baker was also ranked on the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau rankings through much of last season, though he was not selected in the recent Entry Draft.

Best of luck in Portland Joey!

Rebels Hire Dorrans As Assistant

The Castlegar Rebels have brought back former assistant coach Jesse Dorrans as an assistant coach and general manager for the upcoming season. Dorrans spent the past two seasons as head coach and GM with Grand Forks.

I chatted with Rebels head coach/GM Steve Junker this morning about the move, and it sounds as though Dorrans will be a definite asset to the club both on the managerial and coaching fronts. His Border Bruins clubs were never short on heart or scrappiness and I'd expect that influence to shine on the 2011-12 Rebels as well.

The Rebels' coaching staff is now back up to its former complement of four (including Bruno Tassone and Darcy Martini) after former assistant Topher Plonka took a head-coaching gig with a midget select club in Alberta.

Rebels Acquire Morisseau

I've received word this afternoon that the Castlegar Rebels have made a trade with the Fernie Ghostriders for two-time defending scoring champ, and local product Scott Morisseau. In exchange, the 'Riders receive 19 year-old forward Josh McGladery.

In Morisseau, the Rebels get a sniper who scored 42 goals and 97 points in Fernie last season, and put up 84 points (33-51) in Beaver Valley the year before that. Needless to say, the 20 year-old will fill a void left by the likes of Ryan Aynsley, though I've also received confirmation that forwards Anthony DeLong and Tyler Robinson are expected to return for their overage seasons as well.

In McGladery, Fernie gets a speedy forward with an absolute howitzer. Although McGladery only put up 13 points (3-10) in 44 games with the Rebels last year, he should thrive in an expanded role in the Elk Valley. The Vancouver product was also one of the more physical forwards with the Rebels in 2010-11, and is never afraid to throw a check or drop the gloves.

Welcome home Scott, and best of luck in Fernie Josh!

More Rebels news (on the coaching front) is expected to be announced ahead of this weekend's training camp in Osoyoos.

Matthews Trade Confirmed

I've now received word the Smokies/Spruce Kings trade sees overage d-man Ben Matthews head north for forward Todd Skirving and futures.

All the best in the 'Peeg to the man one of my pre-decessors dubbed "The Alaskan Elk," and welcome to Trail Todd!

Expect audio reaction to this deal over the next couple of days when I get back to the Kootenays.

Sent wirelessly from my BlackBerry device on the Bell network.

Matthews to PG?

The Prince George Spruce Kings are reporting the acquisition of 20 year-old defenseman Ben Matthews from the Smokies on their website this evening as part of a slough of Friday deals involving the club. The reported return to Trail is 19 year-old forward Todd Skirving.

I have received (as yet) no confirmation on this trade from the Smoke Eaters due mainly to the fact that I am away for the weekend. But I will say from a roster composition standpoint the move makes a bit of sense, as the Smokies currently have four over-age blueliners (Matthews, Wong, Sidhu, and McEwan) on their roster. Of note, Matthews, an Alaska native, is also draft property of the NAHL's Kenai River Brown Bears.

Stay tuned to the blog for any and all reaction over the next few days.

Dever Named New Smokies Assistant Coach

The Smokies have announced today that Bob Dever has been hired as the team's new assistant coach. Dever is a former assistant with Merritt and Vernon in the BCHL, and a former head coach of Creston in the KIJHL. He'd spent the past three years in Hungary coaching at both the under-18 and professional ranks.

The Smokies website has this story on the hiring, and Mountain FM will have head coach Bill Birks' thoughts on the move through the afternoon today.

Interesting to note as well the presence of another Merritt connection. Birks and Dever played together with the Centennials for one season, and both men were assistant coaches at one time with the club (Birks under Al Glendinning, Dever under Mike Vandekamp). Merritt blogger Brian Wiebe had this chat with Dever last summer in advance of the 2010-11 season. His club, Miskolci Jegesmedvek JSE, reached the semi-finals of the Hungarian MOL league last year.

Bits & Bites: The Smokies have added Brad Rand, Joe Quewezance and Howie Finch to their scouting staff. Forward Ryan Luiten has joined the AJHL's Brooks Bandits. He scored 8-9-17 in 48 games split between Trail and Surrey during the 2010-11 season. The Castlegar Rebels are also expected to announce a new assistant coach this week. Without revealing too much I'm told the candidate in question is a former Neil Murdoch division head coach. KIJHL affiliates Craig Martin, Jake Lucchini, Scott Davidson (Beaver Valley), Darren Medeiros, Quinn Klimchuk (Castlegar) and Jeremy McGregor (Grand Forks) are part of 12 new commitments to the BC Major Midget League's Kootenay Ice. The club held their training camp in Nelson last weekend.

Rebels Ass't Coach Moves On

Longtime Rebels assistant coach/assistant GM Topher Plonka has accepted a head-coaching position with the SISEC (Swiss International Sports & Education Centre) Selects midget program in Alberta. Plonka, a former Rebel player, had been with Castlegar in a coaching capacity for the past four seasons after playing college hockey in Missouri.

Speaking to him, he seems very excited about the opportunity to be a head coach for a program full of talented, international players. He'll be missed for sure around the Rebels dressing room this season, but I wish him nothing but the best in his new home.

Stay tuned to Mountain FM's sports coverage tomorrow morning for his thoughts. As always, tape will be made available here once it's run on the station.

Smokies Assistant Search: I hear the announcement about a new Trail Smoke Eaters assistant coach could be made sometime this week. At last check, the team had narrowed potential candidates into a short list. The position, of course, became available when former assistant Bill Birks assumed the head-coaching responsibilities earlier this off-season.
