Beitel to Nelson

The Nelson Leafs have signed former Smoke Eaters defenseman J.J. Beitel after the Calgary product was let go by Trail earlier this week.

Beitel put up 3 points in 14 games from the back end for the Smoke Eaters, but was released following the signing of Shane Poulsen prior to Wednesday's game in Salmon Arm.

Beitel will do well in some of the smaller rinks in the KIJHL (the likes of Grand Forks and Beaver Valley come to mind). He's not afraid to hit and when given the opportunity can direct pucks to the net from the point on the power-play.

With as many as five defenseman on the sidelines in Nelson, Beitel could very well make his debut tonight when the Leafs travel to Fernie to face the Ghostriders (6:30 Pacific, Fernie Memorial Arena).

KIJHL Tonight: There's local action closer to home tonight as well, as Beaver Valley hosts Grand Forks (7:00, Beaver Valley Arena). The Nitehawks are coming off a pair of weekend losses against Creston Valley and Castlegar, while new goaltender Cole Buckley and the Border Bruins are searching for their first victory of the season. Grand Forks forward Cody Robertson has seen what was originally posted on the league website as a three-game suspension (incurred against the Nitehawks on October 27th) increased to nine games for a checking-to-the-head match penalty.

Hi Chris,

Who updates the website for the smokies? It always appears to be weeks behind, the poll has never been changed since the start of the season, there is really no reason for fans to visit that site.

I apologize if I sound negative, but the Smokies marketing seems to be a lack lustered effort.

Steve,

I manage the website as part of my duties with the team. And I'll fully admit it hasn't been as big a priority as perhaps it should to this point but that will change. Not my forte by any stretch but count on more of an effort from myself.

The team doesn't currently have a marketing rep per se, but I will say from a radio station perspective, despite not carrying the away games I'd like to think we have as much Smoke Eaters coverage as possible, along with our other local Junior 'B' clubs.

Thanks for the feedback.
