Michael Zalewski, Darren Nowick and Jedd Soleway all scored in the first period as the Vernon Vipers defeated the Smokies 4-2 at Cominco Arena Friday.
The Vipers raced out to the early advantage thanks in part to two power-play goals (Nowick and Soleway), before the Smokies came to life in the second period.
Garrett McMullen scored his first goal as a Smoke Eater, lifting a backhand shot from the low slot past Vipers goaltender Kirby Halcrow, before a Marley Keca slapper handcuffed the Vernon keeper with 8 seconds remaining in the period.
Adam Tambellini's third goal against Trail in two games rounded out the scoring in the third period.
Halcrow made 31 saves to collect the victory in goal, while James D'Andrea was tagged with the loss despite being replaced by Reed Vogt at the outset of the second period.
Did You See: Castlegar product Ryan Renz delivered the hit of the night midway through the third period, knocking Smoke Eaters forward Adam Fares flying in the Vernon zone.
Up Next: The Smokies get an early start and a lengthy bus trip to Salmon Arm tomorrow. I'll have both weekend contests (for real this time) on Ustream beginning with the Silverbacks' contest at 7:00 Saturday.
Local Hockey Tonight: Trevor Forward scored three times to lead Creston Valley past Beaver Valley 5-3 this evening in KIJHL play. The Leafs meanwhile dropped their third straight game, 4-2 at Princeton. Selkirk College won on home ice tonight, 4-1 over Eastern Washington University.
